At Al-Nas Hospital… the first of its kind, for children with pulmonary artery atrophy

People’s Charitable Hospital for Heart and Digestive Diseases held a medical conference to announce the achievement of a catheterization procedure, the first of its kind in the world, for children suffering from pulmonary artery atrophy in the heart, which is considered a new glimmer of hope to save the lives of thousands of children, in the presence of Ayman Abbas, CEO of the hospital. People, Eng. Hatem El-Mulla, Vice President and CEO of the Hospital, and Dr. Sherine Abdel Salam, Medical Director of People’s Hospital and a member of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology.

For her part, Dr. Sherine Abdel Salam announced that the medical team at Al-Nas Hospital has developed an interventional catheter to build a path between the right ventricle and the atrophied pulmonary arteries for cases of children suffering from pulmonary artery atrophy, after many researches to arrive at this precise catheter that can be performed by the medical team. To the hospital, the patient returns to his normal life again.

She continued: In the past, operations for pulmonary artery atrophy were performed surgically by installing an arterial connection or collecting blood capillaries, and both of them carried a high degree of risk to the patient’s life in addition to their poor results. Given Al-Nas Hospital’s belief in its role in finding solutions to such incurable diseases, the medical team began doing a lot of work. Research has led to the development of building a path from the heart to the pulmonary arteries through the capillaries, with the installation of a stent to encourage these pulmonary capillaries to grow and improve the level of oxygen in the blood so that the patient can return to his normal life.

On the sidelines of the conference, Dr. Osama Abdel Aziz, pediatric cardiologist consultant at Al-Nas Hospital, said: There was no ideal solution for surgery for cases of atrophy of the main, right, and left pulmonary artery, and it required operations to be performed outside Egypt, so the medical team at Al-Nas Hospital began to find a solution for these cases through catheterization with a specific technique, which is open. The atrophied pulmonary artery, and we expand it and stent it to increase the amount of blood that reaches the atrophied pulmonary arteries, which creates a new hope of saving these children with complete repair operations after that. We have performed such advanced catheterization in nearly 40 cases so far successfully, and after a while the cases underwent operations. Surgery for easy total repair.

For his part, Ayman Abbas, CEO of the hospital, indicated that the cases are being discussed through the Medical Council, and we aim to perform the largest number of operations for children during the coming period, and the challenge is to operate a larger number of beds as well as the abundance of medical supplies, and the attempts of all Egyptians with us through their solidarity are capable. To stand up to any challenge.

Ayman Abbas noted the awareness role played by the hospital as well, as the hospital, through the medical team, makes periodic visits to youth centers to continually educate families, which is one of our goals.

It is worth noting that pulmonary artery atrophy is an obstacle for affected children to lead their normal lives, because of the symptoms it includes, including severe cyanosis, as blood does not reach the heart to the lungs due to severe atrophy of the pulmonary artery, the inability to exercise any effort, and a decrease in the level of oxygen in the blood. .

Peoples Hospital is the largest charitable hospital for treating heart and digestive diseases in Egypt and the Middle East. It was opened in 2019 with a capacity of 600 beds, 4 catheterization rooms, 10 operating rooms, and 148 intensive care units.
